The short definition
SEO means helping search engines understand your pages, and helping the right people choose those pages when they search. In B2B, the “right people” are rarely impulse buyers. They are operators, founders, and managers comparing vendors over weeks or months.
If you copy a B2C playbook — short product pages, coupon keywords, and traffic as the scoreboard — you will attract the wrong visits and starve the pages that actually start a sales conversation.
What a B2B searcher is trying to do
Most valuable B2B queries sit in one of three jobs: understand a problem, compare approaches, or justify a vendor. A page that only says “we are the best agency” matches none of those jobs.
- Problem: “why is our SaaS blog not converting demos”
- Approach: “product-led SEO vs sales-led SEO”
- Vendor: “b2b seo agency for professional services”
What to measure instead of raw traffic
Traffic is a lagging vanity number on a new site. Watch qualified actions: demo requests, “talk to us” forms, and return visits from the same company. Rankings on a short list of intent-matched queries matter more than ranking for a broad word like “SEO.”
Northline’s own site is built that way: few pages, each with a job, linked to an offer. See the two-week technical SEO sprint and how we write B2B content briefs if you want the operating version of this idea.
